COURSE INFORMATION

Course Dates

Aerial Cinematography
May 13 - June 19
2:30pm - 4:30pm

12 sessions

Prerequisites

It's strongly recommended that you have taken at least our Intro to UAV Tech course. You'll need to know how to manually operate an FPV style drone as well as understanding how to get into the Betaflight configuration system to make operational changes. You don't have to be great at flying, but at least have had a little experience.

If you've operated an assisted vehicle such as DJI or Autel, this is not that type of flight. We will be using these at times, but this is primarily a manual flight training course.

I'll try and post a video of what we'll be doing and what you should know. Please email me if you have any questions. I don't want any misunderstanding about the goals of this course.

Course Overview

After teaching UAV design courses for nearly a decade we felt it's time to take all our learning and focus that on a solid end goal that our students can apply professionally. This is UAV aerial cinematography.

For those interested in developing their skills, offering services such as a photographer, surveyor, emergency responder, mappings specialist, inspector, or researcher, are just some of the paths you might choose.

Additional roles can be found in a variety of industries, including construction, agriculture, and environmental monitoring, and may involve tasks such as data collection, aerial imaging, and equipment maintenance.

We strongly believe in the human skill of manual drone operation. Even if you're typically operating a basic "out of the box" vehicle like a DJI or Autel, having these skills can get you shots the others can't as well as saving your equipment if you run into a rough situation.

Video Editing

DaVinci Resolve will be used in class to introduce students to the fundamental principles of video editing.

Participants will learn how to import media into DaVinci Resolve and navigate the editing interface.

Storyboarding

Storyboarding and shot planning will be used to help visualizing scenes and by planning shots in advance, students will be able to anticipate challenges and capture coherent narratives.

FAA - Remote Pilot Certificate
14 CFR - "Part 107" Exam

Anyone looking to operate drones commercially in the United States needs to pass the "Unmanned Aircraft General – Small (UAG)" exam, per the FAA's Small UAS Rule (Part 107).

This has been common referred to as simple, "The Part 107 Exam".

In class we'll cover key topics included in the exam, such as airspace classifications, weather patterns, drone maintenance, and emergency procedures.

This will help you prepare for the certification process and ensure you understand what is required for successful completion of the exam.

Flight Skills Training

Ultimately, the quality of your shots come down to your skill as an operator.

We'll work on the essential flight maneuvers that are critical for effective aerial cinematography.
